Matt Tompikns

In the media storytelling class, we had a guest speaker come in and speak to us about career advice for Journalism students. Our speaker was Matt Tompkins. Tompkins has started in our shoes. He is a fellow University of Nebraska Omaha alumni and even in the school of communication. He started out doing Mav radio and learning as much as possible with things radio. He currently works on the radio today and has had many receivers show the in his time. He said that his three tips of advice for a student looking to get jobs and experience in journalism are to be Consistent, have quality work, and to be resilient. He said a lot of opportunities have come to him from having all these things. He said that being consistent is very important to having anything successful. One thing that he said that I found surprising was that Many people who make podcasts usually stop making podcasts around episode 7. He said that one thing that most people struggle with when starting and creating something is trying to apply to a big audience. He said that you should make something and have a target audience for the things you create, especially on the radio. He said that you should picture a specific person and know all the essential things about them, such as age, race, gender, and even down to their hobbies. He also talked about networking and how important that is. Networking shows people who you are, and knowing those things can help you get ahead.  Just being resilient is another thing he talked about. He said that doing this how’s that you are loyal and willing to do a lot of things. So when showing up shows that you have the willingness to learn and be loyal which help when looking for jobs
